2009 News Archive

20-12-09: In spite of the snow and terrible road conditions, the Christmas Fun Shoot was definitely a lot of fun. There were some folk in fancy dress and some of those rather more fancy than others... you can judge for yourself! Eric was, once again, tha man on the spot with the camera and his photos of the night are now on our Flickr Gallery Service.
Many thanks to all who, in any way, helped make it happen!

08-12-09: This year's Junior National Indoor Championships saw Zoe and Jessica once more amongst the very best; Jessica James, with a score of 563, finished fourth and only two points off a bronze medal. Zoe Coggins, continuing her superb run of form, scored 583 (one point shy of her own national record) to retain the junior title; she was also part of the winning England team in the 'Home Nations' competition, coincident with the GB national tournament.
A new addition to the 'Nationals' this year is a personal award ceremony in which Zoe Coggins received the title of "Junior Lady Compound Archer of the Year". Something of a mouthful but a wonderful award for an exceptional archer to bring back home!.
Jess, Zo, we're proud of you. Very well done!

03-12-09: Don't forget that the Christmas Fun Shoot is on for the evening of Friday 18th December, at our Indoor Range. On offer will be novelty targets, festive prizes, food and seasonal nibbles as well as a raffle / prize draw. Fancy dress is highly recommended, but not entirely compulsory; you can wimp out if you want... If you're an archer from a local club and want to come and join in (it's free), please let us know so we're aware of numbers.

03-12-09: The Coaching Organiser is in the process of emailing those on the waiting list for the January Beginners' Course; if your name is marked at the top on the Waiting List then check your email inbox, your invitation should be there!
A number of those who've been on the list for some time have not been able to take up their places on a course; this means that, together with our have-a-go sessions, we'll be able to cater for far more people interested in trying archery than in previous years. So, if you've seen it at the Olympics, World Championships or even Robin Hood and fancy having a try, email us with your contact details or come along to our indoor range on a Wednesday or Friday Evening or a Sunday afternoon; numbers vary due to away tournaments but you'll get a good idea of what we're all about!

03-12-09: Congratulations to the beginners who, following their final session last night, completed the course with flying colours: Alan, Andy, Eve, Jack, Joshua, Gillian and Nicola, you did yourselves proud and we look forward to see you continuing your progress in the future. We also look forward to seeing one or two more completing their course following illnesses.
An important note to everyone in the club is to remember that coaching isn't just for beginners; anyone in the club can call on us if they need any help or advice!

30-11-09: When it comes to birthday presents, few people could get away with asking for a couple of national records and lots of kudos; at Penrith on Sunday 29th November, Zoe Coggins recieved exactly that as she took the records for a FITA25m (scoring 565) and the double indoor FITA (a combined score of 1130). I'm guess her smile will be just that bit wider on her birthday this week... Have a good one, Zoe; you've really deserved it!

23-11-09: The 2009 National Junior Rankings have been published on the GNAS website. First on the list is the Junior Ladies' Compound category, with Zoe Coggins standing proudly at the top, with Jessica James surging up to fifth. This is, of course, excellent news for both our girls; our congratulations go to them, along with all our support for the future! The full official rankings list can be found on the GNAS Website.

23-11-09: At Green Lane Archers' (Brays) Tournament, Cleadon Archers finished both among the medals and, more notably, with some record-breaking scores. The folk deserving praise are as follows:
Gents Recurve - Mike Foster 2nd
Gents Compound - Steve James 3rd
Gents Barebow - Rob McQuillin 1st. National Record, Bray 1 (subject to ratification)
Gents Longbow - Jim Hockaday 2nd
Lady Longbow - Ann Lee 1st. National Record, Bray 1 (subject to ratification)
Lady Longbow - Alex Coggins 2nd.
Junior Lady Compound - Jessica James 1st.

23-11-09: This coming Sunday (29th November), there will be a 'working party' from 12 noon to refurbish our Danage Target Wall at the indoor range; as with most jobs, many hands make light work so, if you can make it, volunteers will be warmly welcomed. If the job is completed in time, normal club shooting will be able to proceed from 2-6pm.

12-11-09: The Calendar Page has been updated with some corrections to the date of several of the 2010 indoor tournaments. A link to the entry form for Whitburn Archers' combined FITA has also been included; many thanks to Jared Thornton for that.

10-11-09: The Cleadon Archers' Indoor Open Tournament is fast approaching. Tournament Organiser Bill Lee has provided the Programme (pdf, 310kB) and Entry form (pdf, 17kB) in electronic format; you can download and print the forms by right-clicking on the links. As the last local tournament shoot (FITA-25m) before Christmas, it's always a popular occasion; we look forward to seeing you at the shoot!

10-11-09: Boldon Community Association will be closing for the Christmas Break on Wednesday 23rd December at 10pm; this means we will be able to shoot on that evening but will need to ensure that everything is cleared completely by 9:30pm.

06-11-09: In the next few days, the Coaching Organiser will be emailing those at the head of the Waiting List with an invitation to the January Beginners' Course (start date: Wed. 6th).
If your name is outside the top eight then don't despair, there's no guarantee that the top eight will be available and there's also another course starting on the 3rd March!

16-10-09: Our Beginners' Page has been updated with more detail and a link to the waiting list for indoor beginners' courses.
The first course of this Autumn/Winter Season begins on Wednesday 28th October and eight people have already been emailed with their invitation.
We're hoping to run two further courses after the Christmas/New Year break so check the beginners' page for information or the waiting list page for a regularly-updated list!

16-10-09: A reminder to anyone shooting indoors on a Wednesday that the Autumn Beginners' Course is due to start on 28th October; there will be no shooting for club members on that Wednesday and the two following Wednesdays (4th & 11th November) in order to protect the target wall from excessive damage.

12-10-09: Green Lane Archers' Indoor Open, the first open of the 2009/10 indoor season, saw medals coming Cleadon Archers' way as well as a national record.
Ann Lee took silver in the Ladies' Longbow whilst Bill Lee took gold in the Gents' Longbow. The soaring form of Zoe Coggins saw her take the national record for Junior Girl's Compound with a score of 576. On the back of a series of such records, Zoe and her coach Peter Jones have been invited to the Sunderland Sports' Fund Awards at the Sunderland Stadium of Light; definitely a great honour but one richly deserved!

06-10-09: Recent competitions have seen yet more superb performances by Cleadon Archers' two young stars, Zoe Coggins and Jessica James. At the Telford Archers' double FITA / GB Series, Zoe broke another three national records on her way to finishing 5th overall. Her new records are: 70m distance score (339), long metric I (683) and junior ladies' double fita (2724).
The Juniors' Five-Cornered Team Shoot saw some appalling weather that made shooting very difficult. The tournament was eventually abandoned but not before Jessica and Zoe took the team compound title and Zoe secured the individual title, exceptional work by both girls! On the following day, the weather abated slightly allowing the Seniors' tournament to be completed, where Zoe soundly beat all competition to take the Ladies' Compound title with a score of 1240.

23-09-09: The hurriedly-rearranged DNAA County Longbow Championships, held at our own range, brought strikingly familiar results to the past few years. Cleadon's gentlemen took all three medals whilst the ladies took Gold and Bronze.
Ann Lee took the Ladies' Gold, Riverside Archers' Ann Conifey the silver and Christine Marshall bronze. Ken Turner took Gents' Gold, Jim Hockaday silver and Bill Lee the bronze; Killingworth archers' Sam Hood took gold as first Junior.
Full results can be downloaded here (pdf, 35KB) and photos of the day, taken by Eric Coggins, are now on our Flickr Photo service.

09-09-09: The Calendar Page has been updated with a full list of rounds for the 2009-2010 Indoor Season; many thanks to Maureen Rylance and Ann Lee for that.
I would also like to thank Maureen for her tireless and often under-appreciated work as records officer here at Cleadon Archers; she will be stepping-down from the post at the next AGM; if our next records officer is even half as dilligent, we'll be in good hands.

01-09-09: This year's Killingworth Double FITA tournament brought more success for Cleadon Archers. Three Cleadoners in particular performed exceptionally well.
In the Ladies' Compound classification, Zoe Coggins was first and, in the process, set a Grand Master Bowman score of 1349 on the Sunday; she is only the second lady compound in the northeast to achieve this and, at sixteen years, is possibly the youngest lady ever to do so. Jessica James was third lady compound (though she is only fifteen!) and set a personal best of 1293 on the sunday. In the Gents' Longbow classification, rising star Jim Hockaday bagged yet another winner's trophy to add to his collection. To complete the set, Jessica's dad Steve James joined the girls to help grab the team trophy to make it a fantastic weekend for the club. Very well done, all of you!
A huge set of 128 photos, again courtesy of Eric Coggins, can be seen on our Flickr Photo Album.

25-08-09: We've added more photographs by Eric Coggins, this time from the Pentangle Team Shoot in Aberdeen, to our Gallery page.
While the DNAA ranked poorly overall, they were heavily outnumbered by other county associations; in spite of this, Zoe Coggins beat allcomers and was 1st Lady Compound with a score of 1246 whilst Alan Kirkup, David Heath and Alan Blogg all performed well.

25-08-09: Cleadon Archers are happy to announce that the DNAA Longbow Championships are top go ahead, held at our own field. The tournament is, of course, open to all GNAS archers and will take place on Saturday 19th September. The Prorgamme/Entry form is available to download and print as a PDF file (217kB) or as an MS 'Word' Document (122kB). Please email us if you have any problems with these downloads or if you need an alternative format.

19-08-09: Eric Coggins has kindly sent in a huge collection of seventy photographs from the Killingworth Open Tournament. This can be viewed, on our Flickr service, through this link.

19-08-09: Cleadon's extremely popular Coaching Courses have had to be delayed by a few weeks due to a serious neck injury to our coaching organiser.
Those at the head of the waiting list will be formally invited by email in early September. The waiting list has been heavily oversubscribed so, if you do not recieve an invitational email by late September, don't worry; you will have moved up the list towards a later course.
In the meantime, please read the Beginners' Page carefully for information before emailing us with questions as it may take some time to get a reply; however, we are hopeful that normal service will resume as soon as possible!

16-08-09: Unfortunately the County Longbow Championships, due to be hosted by Morpeth Archers on 22nd August, has been cancelled. Hopefully alternative arrangements can be made to hold the Championships at a later date, so watch this space for news.

12-08-09: After adding the pictures from the Diamond Jubilee Tournament to our Flickr Photoset collection, I noticed it was difficult to find from the actual Gallery Page. This has now been remedied with a colourful new index table to take you direct to events' information pages. If there are any problems with it, let me know and I'll make alterations.

10-08-09: Many thanks to Eric Coggins for his photographs from the Diamond Jubilee Tournament, which can now be seen in a Flickr Photo Set. More photo galleries can be found on the Gallery page.

05-08-09: Following the wonderful day we experienced for our Diamond Jubilee tournament, Bill Lee has sent through a Results and Awards List as a 61kB pdf file. If you have problems with the file or would like the list in a different format, please email us.

03-08-09: Some wonderful non-shooting news to make its way to our attention is that Graham &apm; Lorna Oliver have had a baby boy, Cieran James Oliver. I think it must be some time since family additions have occurred with existing members (too much time spent shooting, perhaps!?). Little Cieran is doing fine and, according to Graham, shows all the signs of a future Cleadon Member!

03-08-09: In a similar vein to the above news, Stan & Maureen Rylance became grandparents again when Chris & Christine had a little girl, Holly Charlotte on 21st June. All are doing well.

27-07-09: Zoe Coggins has been continuing the excellent form that saw her compete in the World Championships; at the Church Stretton double FITA tournament, she broke the national record for a Short Metric round, scoring 677 from a maximum of 720. Brilliant work, Zoe, well done!

21-07-09: As some of you will already know Denis Burns suffered a heart attack last Sunday; thanks to the excellent work of the Freeman Hospital, he is now recovering though, hopefully, he'll not be overdoing it anytime soon. Denis is a great member of our club and I'm sure you'll join us in wishing him all the very best at this time.

19-07-09: FLOODING: Following several days of heavy rain, there is significant flooding on the field. The area around the 100yd/90m line is underwater, as is much of the south (hedge) side of the range. 80yards is shootable but has an 'aquatic' overshoot area. The rest of the field is usable but, as you may expect, rather wet. Richard Wright has taken two photos, now uploaded to Flickr: Pic#1 Pic#2
If you are desperate to get some arrows shot, please make sure you bring appropriate footwear but do not attempt to wade into the floodwater as the water in ditches is up to two metres (6ft) deep.
Hopefully, as in previous years, this will drain away in the next few days.

10-07-09: Many thanks to Eric Coggins and Ann Lee for sending in the latest batch of photgraphs, now in the Gallery Page. Direct links to the photo galleries can be found on the right-side of this page

07-07-09: Cleadon Archers' Diamond Jubilee Shoot will be held on Saturday 1st August. Archers from all parts are warmly invited to join us in this milestone celebration. Entry forms are can be downloaded here (pdf, 171kB) or from the downloads page.
Rounds will be shot in the morning (Warwick Round) and afternoon ('Jubilee Round', 60 arrows at 60yds on a 60cm face), followed by a pie and pea dinner (4-4:30pm). We look forward to your company!

07-07-09: The Cleadon Junior Open has been cancelled. It will be back on the calendar for next year; details will given closer to the time.

06-07-09: At the National Archery Championships, held at Lilleshall, Jessica James and Zoe Coggins topped the tables on both days. On Saturday, shooting a Metric 2 round, Zoe finished first and Jessica second.
On Sunday, Zoe won the 'Hereford' round, making her Junior National Champion for Ladies' Compound, whith a score of 1230, whilst Jessica won the 'Bristol 3' group with a score of 1290.
Two national junior ladies' champions in one club? Now that IS impressive!

01-07-09: If three is a hat-trick, what's four?
To round off an astonishing week for Zoe Coggins, she's broken a fourth national record in the just one week! Zoe's name is joined in the records for the FITA 720, Hereford and Long National by her score of 338 at 70m during a Ladies' FITA round; this beat the previous by six points, on her way to finishing sixth overall in the GB Series.
Truly a stunning achievement.

01-07-09: Jim Hockaday won the Belsay Castle Longbow Tournament with a combined score of 644 for the two days. Stan Rylance was second with 628. Though Ken Turner was Sunday's winner, he couldn't quite overhaul third-placed Trevor Cameron-Brown:
Saturday Awards: First Gentleman, Jim Hockaday; Second Gentleman, Stan Rylance; Novelty Round, Stan Rylance
Sunday Awards: Third Lady, Maureen Rylance; First Gentleman, Ken Turner; Second Gentleman, Jim Hockaday; Third Gentleman: Stan Rylance; Novelty Round: Ken Turner
This was an excellent effort by all our archers who kept up Cleadon's dominance with the Longbow...

26-06-09: Another day, another record... With the world Championships just a few weeks away, Zoe Coggins has broken another national record, in both senses of the phrase! This time it's for a 'National' round. More kudos, well deserved!

25-06-09: Zoe Coggins has won the GNAM National Tournament with a record-breaking score to add to her lengthy list of records. Shooting a Hereford round, Zoe, who will be travelling to Utah to represent Great Britain in the World Championships next month, scored an impressive 1230 on the first day before scoring a blistering 1264 on day two, breaking the Junior National Record by two points. Her day two score also falls into the Grand-Master Bowman category, another sign that her form is still improving as she looks forward to joining the national team; with this kind of form she will fit in well with World's finest!
Well done, Zoe, we're all proud of you!

25-06-09: We have a World Champion in the club!
Stan Rylance, with his trusty longbow, saw off competition from the ever-strong field to win the Wand World Championships, held at Raby Castle in North Yorkshire. Stan, who seems to excel at most things he turns his hand to, also won the preliminary tournament in the morning, underlining his impressive form in the most demanding of archery disciplines.
Fantastic result, Stan; you fully deserve it!

07-06-09: Summer is nearly upon us and Cleadon's next two Open Tournaments are fast approaching. The Cleadon Junior Open will be held on Saturday the 11th July and the Programme (pdf, 205KB) and Entry form (pdf, 18KB) can now be downloaded and printed.

29-05-09: The Calendar Page has been updated with details of the DNAA County Tournaments on the weekend of 18th - 19th July; these take the form of a York/Hereford and FITA Stars respectively.
PDF Entry forms for the DNAA Championships (18th) and the FITA Stars (19th) are available to download and print from these links or from the calendar page.

18-05-09: It seems wherever Cleadon Archers go these days, trophies follow!
It must be said that one thing that we all gain from tournaments, whether winning or not, is a collection of happy memories and the chance to meet friends from other clubs. However, on the 17th May, the Backworth Open brought yet more success for Cleadon Archers with some familiar names brining medals back!
Zoe Coggins - 1st Lady Compound
Ann Lee - 1st Lady Longbow
Mark Speight - 1st Gent Compound
Jim Hockaday - 1st Gent Longbow
Yet another fantastic job!

04-05-09: For anyone who missed the news last week, we recieved the fantastic news that both Zoe Coggins and Jessica James qualified to shoot the World Archery Championships in Utah this Summer. We're incredibly proud of them both and wish them all the very best for the tournament; it should be a fantastic experience.

04-05-09: The Walker Open (3rd May) brought more success for Cleadon Archers with four medals coming back to the club:
Zoe Coggins - 1st Lady Compound
Mark Speight 2nd Gents Compound
Ann Lee - 1st Lady Longbow
Jim Hockaday - 1st Gents Longbow
This was an excellent effort from them all; very well done!

04-05-09: The Stan Patterson Memorial/Cleadon Open is held this coming Sunday (10th May). All Cleadon Archers attending the shoot should make an effort to get there as early as possible to help with the setting-out of the field. To all archers taking part in the shoot, good luck and... happy arrows!

01-04-09: A Working Party has been organised to prepare the field for the Club Open. It will be on Saturday 18th April, beginning at 10am. See Richard (The Field Captain) for details.
There are a number of important tasks that would be easy to do with enough hands to help so please, if you can get along, all help would be appreciated.

31-03-09: Don't forget that we're now outdoors! Club nights are the same as indoors: Wednesday and Friday evenings; however, Sundays' start times are either 11am or 10am, depending on the round to be shot.
Cleadon Archers can use the outdoor range at East Boldon Cricket Club at any time and, if they so wish, in any weather...

26-03-09: It's easy to tell that the Outdoor Season is on its way! Entry forms for our own Stan Patterson Memorial / Cleadon Open (Sunday, 10th May) have joined the increasing list now available to download from the Calendar Page.

25-03-09: Entry forms for the Belsay Castle Longbow Tournament (27-28th June) are also now available to download from the Calendar Page. Many thanks to Sue Jenkins of Ponteland Archers for those.

25-03-09: Entry forms for the Priory Archers 'Soup Shoot' (19th April) are now available to download from the Calendar Page. Many thanks to John Willet of Priory Archers for sending those.

14-03-09: I've finally managed to get a long-overdue update in! You'll find new details on the Beginners' Page, Calendar Page and Gallery Page.
Many thanks to Eric for the pictures now in our Flickr Galleries.

21-01-09: The English Archery Federation have announced the squad for the Home Nations Championships at Lilleshall in February; the senior squad's reserves include our own Zoe Coggins. I'm not sure how many times a junior archer has been chosen for the senior squad in the past but this is a first for the North-East and undoubtedly a huge honour for a young archer who has been shooting superbly well.

18-01-09: The Calendar Page has been updated with the 2009 Outdoor Season shoots. Many of these are yet to be finalised and may be subject to change.
